Pennsylvania lawmakers react to government shutdown

Pennsylvania lawmakers took to social media to react to the government shutdown that occurred at Midnight on Wednesday.

Pennsylvania and the nation face uncharted territory as lawmakers in Washington failed to come to an agreement to keep government programs operating before the Midnight deadline. Pennsylvania has also failed to reach a budget agreement, three months after the deadline.

Pennsylvania lawmakers took to social media to express their reactions to the shutdown.

U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), who was one of two Democrats to vote with Republicans, posted on X, saying:

It’s a sad day for our nation. Our government shuts down at midnight. I voted AYE to extend ACA tax credits because I support them—but I won’t vote for the chaos of shuttering our government. My vote was our country over my party. Together, we must find a better way forward.

Fetterman said that his vote was for his country, not his party, and that America needs to find a way forward together.

Sen. Dave McCormick posted a video on X, saying, “The Democrats voted to shut the government down and put hardworking Americans last.

This is terrible for America. It is going to but a pause on spending that supports basic services, our military, our border patrol, our key response units across our country, and this is essentially because Democrats have tried to hold keeping the goverment open hostage to $1 trillion of new spending.

State Rep. Scott Perry (R-10) also weighed in on the shutdown, taking to X to say, “With one exception, every single House Democrat voted to shut down the government over a CLEAN 7-week spending bill that consists of all spending the Democrats previously approved. HUH?!”
